Quarantine and green - 6 steps to become environmentally friendly in your home
Are you in quarantine and bored at home? Half of the world is now in the same position.
Many of us are now reflecting but also worried about the future. However, one positive outcome are the environmental benefits to a slow-down of activities. BBC news and the European Environment Agency (EEA) have reported a significant reduction in air and water pollution around the world. So while we are all locked in our house, here are some activities we can adopt in our own home.
Review your cabinet of cleaning products. Most of us have a wide range of different cleaning chemicals. Most of them are unnecessary, expensive and damaging to our water supply. Here you can find how to make our own non-toxic cleaning products. The best part is that you mostly have all the products at home.
Indoor-plants are a great way to actually continue cleaning air and remove toxins in your home. Here are some examples of plants; Rubber plants, English ivys, Peace lily, Snake plant and Aloe vera plants. All of them should be plants you can find in your garden shop. You can also order the seeds or plants online so you dont leave your house.
Declutter your home, going through unwanted items. But don't throw them away. Recycle, repurpose or donate them to people who are in need or charity. Here you can also clean out your books, and take some time to read.
Make your own waste assessment and understand how much and what waste your household is generating. Try and think about what you could change in the mindset of recycle, reuse and reduce. Safely store and dispose of hazardous waste in a responsible manner.
Avoid food deliveries as much as possible and reduce packaging waste by ordering organic food boxes. Turn into a master chef and cook your favorites at home.
Compost your discarded food and organic waste. You can learn how to set up an organic compost in your garden that converts into a great resource for your plants. If you do not have a garden, there are plenty of services that pick up your organic waste. Check out what your city has to offer.
